Mio Technology to release tablet

Taiwanese portable navigation device (PND) maker Mio Technology Ltd (宇達電通) is poised to join the tablet fray by unveiling its own device by the end of the year, a company source said.

“Talks are underway with telecom operators in Asia, where the device will be primarily introduced,” the source said, adding the US market would not be one of the rollout markets.

The tablet, called Mio Moov V780, is a 7-inch multi-touch tablet that was showcased at this year’s CeBIT. It features Wi-Fi or WiMAX, and has a digital TV receiver. Its carrying case doubles as a keyboard dock for extended use.

A built-in 3G module to support phone conversation could be an option, but the company may not include it in the module to keep the sale price “competitive,” the source said.

The Mio Moov V780 runs on the Windows CE operating system (OS) to offer consumers Web browsing and it boasts GPS navigation — a core feature for Mio offerings.

Mio has been trying to diversify into consumer electronics products by leveraging on its GPS navigation as the overall PND market has become saturated.

MiTAC International Corp (神達電腦), Mio’s parent company, bought US-based Magellan Navigation Inc’s PND operations in December 2008 for US$96 million.

This followed its acquisition of US rival Brunswick Corp’s GPS unit in March 2007 for US$16 million to obtain its Navman brand.

The debut of Mio’s tablet had initially been set for the second quarter last year, which would have given the company a jumpstart in the tablet frenzy, but its delay until the end of this year has allowed other firms such as Apple Inc to take the mantle as industry leader.

Meanwhile, HTC Corp (宏達電), the world’s leading maker of smartphones running on the Windows Mobile and Android OS, has its first tablet in the works and is scheduled to debut it in next year’s first quarter, according to the Chinese-language Digitimes.

The tablet will be made by Pegatron Corp (和碩), a contract maker of notebooks, motherboards and graphic cards.

Sources said HTC’s tablet will ride on Nvidia chipsets, Android 3.0 OS and most likely will be smaller than the 9.7-inch iPad for product differentiation.

- TradeCredits

TradeAway TradeCredits can be used to purchase other items, services and real estate on TradeAway from users that have agreed to sell all or a portion of their listing with TradeCredits. - Can I Redeem My TradeCredits For Cash?

No. TradeCredits are not bank deposits, legal tender, securities or commodities, and may not be redeemed for cash.

- What is the minimum/maximum amount of a transaction can consist of?

There is no minimum or maximum TradeCredits transaction amount. There is however a minimum $3.50 transaction fee.

- What are the fees?

It is absolutely free to register for TradeCredits membership. List items that you will accept TradeCredits for and to browse items that other Users are willing to take TradeCredits for. TradeAway charges a cash fee to the buyer, 4% of the transaction value, when the transaction is completed by the TradeBroker, seller and buyer. NO fees are due until you spend the TradeCredits. These fees will be higher if you contract to have the listings worked by the TradeBroker however, these fees will be negotiated and agreed to in advance.

- Can I pay my transaction fee with TradeCredits instead of Cash?

The 4.0% transaction fee that is charged by TradeAway is a cash payment only and cannot be paid with TradeCredits. There is a minimum $3.50 transaction fee. Payment can be paid in check, credit card or money order. The credits will not be released from an account until this fee is paid unless other arrangements with management are made. In some cases, a secured note to company will be acceptable in larger transactions.

- What is the value of a TradeCredits?

The Internal Revenue service recognizes one TradeCredit as being equivalent to one American dollar and treats all barter transactions as taxable events just like any cash transaction.

- Are my TradeCredits Transferable to Another User?

Yes, upon registration by a new user and transaction fees paid.

You can contact any member whose trade interests you simply by clicking on the contact button in their listing. For privacy reasons, the member's e-mail address will not be visible to you. Your e-mail is sent through an anonymous contact form in which you must enter your message and your reply e-mail address. You must also re-enter a random eight digit security code which is already provided for you on the contact member page. Visitors are able to read the U-Exchange Discussion Board but can only post by becoming a member.

You will be assigned a Green icon. This means you can "go" trade as much as you like. If you have completed your trade or are going away on holidays, you can "stop" trading by selecting the red icon in your Edit Profile. Your post will not be visible to viewers at this time but you are still able to login and browse listings. To resume trading, simply select the green icon again.
